Slice of Americana Films
Be warned this blog post titled ThunderCats, Psoro and Badassery is being written after a very long Saturday that kept going until 3:30 A.M. Sunday. My mind and body are moving a little slow this afternoon.
What does any of this have to do with ThunderCats, Psoro and Badassery? – every damn thing I hope. I like to call Briana Malmstrom aka on Twitter @Calavera_Kid a social network friend of mine like the Cisco Kid. Her Rough Ride Creations are the definition of “badassery” a word she put out on Twitter summed up what making indie films is about to me.
Crowd funding is FANTASTICO for the indie film movement. Lots of indie films would never be made without it. We just decided to go all in with our own financial resources because Psoro was too hot on our creative minds to wait on producing it. The itch to make this movie was too great to pause to wait for donations from crowd funding sources. We had to scratch that itch!
I’m a gambler at heart and this is my personal opinion not the Psoro team as a whole. I type that because I do get nasty emails sometimes over crowd funding. Playing with other people’s money (OPM) that you’re not responsible for paying back takes the gambling rush out of making movies. I prefer having to answer to film investors or keeping track of money that comes out of pocket to make a movie.
I’ve always felt that a real accountable experience with money teaches a filmmaker the necessary business side of filmmaking. If every movie was produced with crowd funding how can a film producer expect to learn the nuts and bolts of film financing? Run short on cash go ask for more money and so on. Film investors or your own bank account have limits. Having to recoup money spent on producing a movie is true experience when you have to pay it back with interest.
PSORO 80s Video Nasty PosterLike other indie film producers and filmmakers money is not easy to find. It takes “badassery” to find money. Now it is time to introduce the ThunderCats to the making of Psoro. We’ve stuck to budget with only a few small overages that didn’t break the bank. Other indie movie producers can relate to this reality. After UK filming of Psoro wrapped we wanted to add more scenes of “badassery” as our creative mojo was strong. Adding more scenes means spending more money.
Filming of Psoro is scheduled for Southern California. We’ve locked actors that include Jennifer Day and Tim Dax. We’ve locked crew and have the new scenes ready to go. There was no honey pot for us to stick our paws in to bridge the film financing. ThunderCats to the rescue!
UK filmmaker Wayne Daniells got creative with the extra film funding needed. He’s a gambler at heart too. Veteran voice actor Larry Kenney has helped out LiarDice Films immensely. Through that relationship Wayne had become a serious ThunderCats collector. It must have been one hell of a sacrifice to move Psoro forward by selling collectible cards, vintage toys and all of his conceptual artwork from the production process of the ThunderCats TV show and also the toy line.
When you make indie movies you need to take risks and trust you have some “badassery” in you to survive. Knowing the value and time Wayne put into collecting ThunderCats I told him not to sell it. The indie filmmaker in him out voted the collector in him. The cash infusion has is taking Psoro to the limits of “badassery” indie cinema style. We are all in.
There is no safety net if we fall. That’s what makes indie films a rush to produce. Thanks to Briana Malmstrom for the word that sparked this post of ThunderCats, Psoro and Badassery. This is indie filmmaker Sid Kali typing:
“We are Thundercats”
“Upholding Justice”
“Truth”
“Honor”
“and Loyalty”
“Thundercats HOOOOOO!”
